A Gary man has been charged as a leader of a California-based international child prostitution and pornography ring.
    Fugitive charges have been filed in Lake Superior Court and sex charges in Los Angeles against Frederick Cornelius Hoston, an ex-convict reported heavily-armed and dangerous.
    Hoston reportedly returned to Gary two months ago to escape arrest in California and narrowly eluded apprehension in Gary Monday, police said.
    Hoston apparently has commuted regularly between Gary and California, but there's no evidence of any involvement in child prostitution in Northwest Indiana, police said.
    Ring members supplied girls, some as young as 3 years old, to customers from all over the nation and Europe for $500.00 a night, said Gary and Los Angeles police.
    The girls also were photographed with their clients and photographs were sold to customers and European pornographic magazines distributed in the United States, police said.
    All the children used in the ring were from southern California, and the mothers of some of the children were paid for allowing their daughters to be trained as professional prostitutes, Los Angeles Investigator William Dworin told the Post-Tribune.
    Hoston's plans for a Northwest Indiana operation were thwarted by an intensive investigation by Indiana police, the Post-Tribune was told. Even crime syndicate pornography houses in Chicago considered Hoston "too hot to handle" because of police pressure.
    Dworin, who called the Los Angeles-based ring one of the largest in southern California, which extended along the Pacific coast to San Diego said a grand jury will meet next month to investigate the ring and will be asked to return indictments against Hoston and 11 other men.
    Dworin said police have identified Hoston as one of two leaders of the loosely-knit ring, which apparently has been in operation at least four years.
    Hoston already has been charged in Los Angeles with 11 felony sex offenses involving two sisters, 14 and 17 who allegedly worked for him as prostitutes.
    Hoston, reportedly armed with a sniper rifle and a silencer-equipped automatic pistol, was spotted in Gary two days ago, but disappeared before police could arrest him.
